Full Description

An archaeological assessment was carried out by J G Robertson in 1996 as part of an environmental impact assessment for a proposed Woodland Grant Scheme application. The assessment consisted largely of the detailed study of a single 1988 aerial photograph.

Site 26: Rig and Furrow. A small area of rig and furrow on relatively level ground below the SW scarp of Egnaig Hill. These traces may extend further eastwards into an area unfortunately obscured by shadow on the AP.
Refs: Visible on AP.
Recommendation: Ground inspection - does the rig and furrow continue? Examine different APs, taken in different conditions. It may then be possible to trace the remains from enlarged APs. <1>

A follow-up full walkover survey was conducted by Wordsworth Archaeological Services in 1996.

Site No: 26.
Site name: Egnaig Hill
Description: On the west side of Egnaig Hill and to the southeast of Loch na Bairness are the remains of a small croft with an intact rig field system. There are 4 buildings visible at this site. <2> (See MHG30185 for 4 buildings)

NGR adjusted based on 1999-2001 vertical aerial photographs. <3>
