Full Description

An archaeological assessment was carried out by J G Robertson in 1996 as part of an environmental impact assessment for a proposed Woodland Grant Scheme application. The assessment consisted largely of the detailed study of a single 1988 aerial photograph.

Site 21: Rig and Furrow. Area of rig and furrow, mostly outside the WGS area but just extending into it.
Refs: Mostly obscured by woodland on the AP, but extensive area marked on the map extract provided by Tilhill Economic Forestry.
Recomm: Ground inspection - check extent of the cultivation. May need field survey if the remains cannot be detected on APs. <1>

A follow-up full walkover survey was conducted by Wordsworth Archaeological Services in 1996.

Site No: 21
Site name: Aultgill?
Description: This area of rig identified from the AP,could not be seen on the ground , though its position could be inferred from an area of bracken-clad grassland. It presumably formed part of the settlement at Aultgill.
Recommendation: The rigs lie within an area of natural regenereation and should not be any further damaged by the tree roots than has already occurred with the bracken rhizomes. <2>

Note: Site not visible on aerial photographs so location based on grid coordinates. (TB 14/5/25)
