Full Description

An archaeological assessment was carried out by J G Robertson in 1996 as part of an environmental impact assessment for a proposed Woodland Grant Scheme application. The assessment consisted largely of the detailed study of a single 1988 aerial photograph.

Site 20: Coffin cairns. Two cairns, just outside the WGS area. These marked the resting places for funeral corteges en route to the burial ground on Eilean Fhianain (St. Finnan's Isle), Loch Shiel. Between the two cairns, the modern road (and the WGS boundary) lies on the site of the old coffin track, which diverges from the modern road beyond the northern cairn.
Refs: Marked on OS Map.
Exploring Sunart. Ardnamurchan. Moidart and Morar, p30
Recommendation: These are outside the area and should not be at risk, though the southern cairn lies near a proposed gate into the WGS enclosure. <1>

A follow-up full walkover survey was conducted by Wordsworth Archaeological Services in 1996.
