Full Description

An archaeological assessment was carried out by J G Robertson in 1996 as part of an environmental impact assessment for a proposed Woodland Grant Scheme application. The assessment consisted largely of the detailed study of a single 1988 aerial photograph.

Site 15: Wall. Straight wall, roughly parallel with another wall, No. 16, and subdividing a large area, bounded by walls, Nos. 8 and 9. It cuts across the area of rig and furrow, No. 14 and presumably belongs to a later system of land division. Refs: Visible on AP
Recommendation: Ground inspection - does the western end join wall, No.8? Check relationship with the rig and furrow. <1>

A follow-up full walkover survey was conducted by Wordsworth Archaeological Services in 1996.

Site No: 15
Description: This wall shows prominently on the AP. On the ground it survives as a stone dyke generally surviving no more than 0.3m high. There seems to be insufficient tumble for this to have been an exclusively turf dyke and it may have been capped with turf. It was clearly later than the rig system at site 14. It appeared to end prior to reaching turf dyke 8. Its function is uncertain but it appears to mark a late subdivision of the lands of Glenuig township. It was possibly linked to site 12.
Recommendation: Planting of rig area 14 should also respect this feature. Elsewhere it should be protected as feature 8 by leaving an exclusion zone of cam.<2>

NGR adjusted based on 1999-2001 vertical aerial photographs. <3>
