Full Description

An archaeological assessment was carried out by J G Robertson in 1996 as part of an environmental impact assessment for a proposed Woodland Grant Scheme application. The assessment consisted largely of the detailed study of a single 1988 aerial photograph.

Site 14: Rig and Furrow. Area of rig and furrow on Monadh Gleann Uige, mostly on the north side of a stream, which flows eastwards to Glenuig. The cultivation is bounded on the east side by a sinuous wall and is bisected by a later wall, No. 15. The remains may be associated with at least three possible structures along the northern bank of the river.
Refs: Visible on AP.
Recommendation: Ground inspection - look for possible structures and other walls. Field survey may be necessary. Rig and furrow may be recorded from enlarged Aps. <1>

A follow-up full walkover survey was conducted by Wordsworth Archaeological Services in 1996.

Site No: 14
Site name: Monadh Gleann Uige
Description: This is one of the best preserved areas of rig cultivation in the WGS area, having been unaffected by tree regeneration and little affected by heather and bog growth. Around the north, east & south sides, the remains of turf enclosure walls can be seen. A small area of rig lies within another enclosure to the southeast. This field system had clearly gone out of use when wall 15 was constructed.
Recommendation: This lies in an area mostly proposed as an open area for future deer culling. Any tree planting in this area should respect the boundaries of the enclosure allowing the enclosure and rigs to survive as a distinct feature in the landscape. As discussed above any planting must be done by hand. <2>

NGR adjusted based on 1999-2001 vertical aerial photographs. <3>
