Full Description

An archaeological assessment was carried out by J G Robertson in 1996 as part of an environmental impact assessment for a proposed Woodland Grant Scheme application. The assessment consisted largely of the detailed study of a single 1988 aerial photograph.

Site 10: Rig and furrow. Area of rig and furrow in the northeast corner of the WGS area, cut by the wall, No. 9. There may be buildings just outside the wall, not marked on the OS Map. Refs: Visible on AP
Recommendation: Ground inspection - check relationship with wall, No. 9. Details of the rig and furrow may be traced from an enlarged AP. <1>

A follow-up full walkover survey was conducted by Wordsworth Archaeological Services in 1996.

Site No: 10
Site name: Glenuig.
Description: An area of unenclosed rig extends along the burn as shown, forming an almost continuous area of cultivation. In places the individual rigs are over lm high from furrow to ridge top.
Recommendation: As an area of rig close to the main access point from Glenuig , parts of this could potentially be displayed for public. However if sites 36-38 are preserved it should be unnecessary to protect this further. It is likely to be partially preserved under the predominantly birch scrub likely to regenerate in this area. <2>

NGR adjusted based on 1999-2001 vertical aerial photographs. <3>
