Full Description

An archaeological assessment was carried out by J G Robertson in 1996 as part of an environmental impact assessment for a proposed Woodland Grant Scheme application. The assessment consisted largely of the detailed study of a single 1988 aerial photograph.

A follow-up full walkover survey was conducted by Wordsworth Archaeological Services in 1996.

Site name: Loch na Bairness
Description: This structure visible both on the AP and the OS maps, is the now ruinous remains of a boathouse, presumably erected by the estate for the use of sports fishermen on Loch na Bairness. It measures 6m by 4m with walls of drystone construction 0.6m thick and up to 1.5m high. A tin roof lies nearby. 12m to the S is a mortar bonded stone feature 2m by ?0.75m wide and 0.4m high. It is not clear what this was used for but is clearly mid 19th century or later in date.
Recommendation: This is proposed as an area of open ground associated with public access to Loch na Bairness. It should not need special protectio <2>
