Full Description

An archaeological assessment was carried out by J G Robertson in 1996 as part of an environmental impact assessment for a proposed Woodland Grant Scheme application. The assessment consisted largely of the detailed study of a single 1988 aerial photograph.

Site 3. Wall: Boundary wall, running from the Smirisary - Samalaman track to the northeast corner of Loch na Bairness. It partially encloses a sub-rectangular field en route. This may be a relatively late feature, associated with large-scale land division and contemporary with Nos. 8, 9 14 and 15.
Refs: Marked on OS Map; partly traceable on AP (long section South of the field is in shadow. <1>

A follow-up full walkover survey was conducted by Wordsworth Archaeological Services in 1996.

Description: Identified as a boundary wall on the AP, this is actually a post and wire fence, possibly on an earlier boundary. There is slight evidence for a boundary following the south bank of the Allt Ruadh. This may only be connected with drainage but might mark the boundary between the settlements of Smirasary and Samalaman. The more recent enclosure centred at NM 6565 7700 shows little trace of rig cultivation on the ground except in the SE corner, though the AP shows some residual evidence for rigs under later ploughing.
Recommendation: This area is proposed as an open area with up to 50% planting. The quality of the remains does not justifarchaeological preservation. In landscape terms this field will be preserved as a distinct feature by the differential planting. <2>

NGR adjusted based on 1999-2001 vertical aerial photographs. <3>
