Full Description

An archaeological assessment was carried out by J G Robertson in 1996 as part of an environmental impact assessment for a proposed Woodland Grant Scheme application. The assessment consisted largely of the detailed study of a single 1988 aerial photograph.

1. Field System: Linear series of fields, of irregular shapes and sizes, on the west side of an unnamed stream, a tributary of Allt Ruadh. One rectangular building is incorporated in the all and another lies to the southwest. Rig and furrow is visible in the northern fields and further west, outside the fields. Feint traces only can be detected in the southern fields. The WGS boundary cuts through the field system; the buildings are Just outside the area but the cultivation remains lie within.
Refs: Field walls marked on OS Map; Rig and furrow visible on AP.
Recommation: Ground inspection. More rig and furrow may be detected on different Aps, taken in different conditions. <1>

A follow-up full walkover survey was conducted by Wordsworth Archaeological Services in 1996.

Site type: Rig system
Site 1 name: Smirisary
Description: This area of former cultivation is dominated by drains and is partially eroded. Though rigs running N/S are evident on the AP, they are less obvious on the ground and it would seem this area has been more recently ploughed.
Recommendation: If the modern fence line is the correct boundary for the WGS then the house site at NM 6519 7692 lies outside the woodland area. The proposal is for this to be an area of natural regeneration. While the field system is of interest it does not justify special protection. <2>

NGR adjusted based on 1999-2001 vertical aerial photographs. <3>
