Full Description

A traditional preaching site at Asahig, Skye. Legend has it that St Maelrubha preached from here. <1>

It was recorded during a walkover survey in 2004 by Archaeological and Ancient Landscape Survey (AALS) in advance of the proposed expansion of the Broadford Airfield. Site 1: A prominent rocky outcrop on the north bank of the Ashaig River, close to the South-western end of the airport runway. Traditionally St. Malrudha's preaching stance during his frequent evangelical missions to Skye. One of a group of sites at Ashaig traditionally associated with the Saint, the others being Tobar Ashik and the associated Chapel and Burial Ground. <2>

Local tradition states that the rock was used for preaching, with people standing in sheltered area to south across the burn. J MacLeod recalled that in recent times, from at least 20 years ago, services were held at least once a year in the summer from the pulpit rock. This was recorded by the ARCH Community Timeline course in 2011. <3>
