Full Description

A walkover survey was conducted by Wordsworth Archaeological Services in 1996.

Site No: 26
NGR: NM 660 754
Site name: Egnaig Hill
Description: On the W of Egnaig Hill and to the SE of Loch na Bairness are the remains of a small croft with an intact rig field system. There are 4 buildings visible at this site.
26/1 NM 660 754 A drystone structure 6m by 2.5m aligned N/S. The N end is partially collapsed whereas the S end has been altered by the addition of a blocking wall to form a chamber lm by 1.5m, the walls being 0.5m thick by lm high. It is not clear why this was done.
26/2 NM 6600 7535 A round ended drystone structure orientated E/W and measuring 6m by 3m with walls up to lm high by 0.6m wide. A little chamber 0.5m wide, almost certainly a still site, has been built against the W end of the building.
26/3 NM 6610 7535 Largely obscured by bracken growth and lying directly W of 26/2 are the remains of a probably turf walled building 4m by 2m. The walls survive up to 0.5m high. There are no signs of stone footings though these may be obscured.
26/4 NM 6610 7535 To the NW of this is another ?turf walled building 4m by 2m. Stone footings 0.2m high are capped by turf 0.3m thick.
Recommendation: This is an intact settlement with a later use as an illicit still and would be suitable for public display as access is relatively easy from the existing footpath to the N at the head of Loch na Bairness. Protection of this site will require regular weeding to prevent tree regeneration.and it may be desirable to control the bracken over sites 26/2-4. <1>
