Full Description

A walkover survey was conducted by Wordsworth Archaeological Services in 1996 for a proposed Woodland Grant Scheme application.

Site No: 30.

Site name: Cruach na Bairness
Description: To the NE of Cruach na Bairness are the remains of a small shieling settlemet, one of the structures of which has been altered to form a still.
30/1. An oval drystone shieling , badly obscured by bracken measures approximately 5m by 3m and is aligned N/S on an E facing slope. The walls are only 0.4m high except at the S end where a small chamber 0.5m wide has been created with walls up to 0.8m high. Another chamber lm square abuts this wall on the S. This is interpreted as the remains of a still.
30/2. 40m NW of the previous site is a small enclosure 3m by 4m that has been built against a large rock. Some large stones lm by 0.5m by 0.15m have been used for walling but are nowhere more than 0.3m high so it was probably turf walled above. Probably an animal pen or dairy store.
30/3. 25m NW of the previous site is another round ended drystone footing aligned E/W and measuring 3m by 4m with the E end formed by a large boulder. The footings are 0.3m high.
Recommendation: This area should be excluded from planting by leaving a 20m exclusion zone and weeded to prevent regeneration. The protected area should link all 3 sites. It is probably not suitable for public display because of its situation, though more active visitors could be directed to it from site 7. <1>
