Full Description
A walkover survey was conducted by Wordsworth Archaeological Services in 1996 for a proposed Woodland Grant Scheme application.
Site No: 31.
Site name: Cruach na Bairness
Description: The remains of a shieling settlement are sited to the E of Cruach na Bairness. It was probably an earlier form of the shieling settlement at site 3.0
31/1 . A circular dished grassy mound c4m in diameter is the remains of an early shieling hut. A smaller structure 3m by 2m and aligned E/w may lie to the W.
31/2. Another probable shieling mound lies c20m W of 31/1. It is less well-defined but appears to measure 4m by 2.5m aligned N/S.
31/3. 30m SSW of 31/2 a small enclosure has been built to the N of a large rock measuring some 4m by 2m. The maximum wall height is 0.75m and it is composed of both turf and stone.
Recommendation: These sites should be protected by a 20m exclusion zone from both planting and natural regeneration. This may require weeding in the future. The protected area should link all three sites As with site 30 it is perhaps too remote for public display. <1>
