Full Description
A township comprising twenty-five unroofed, one partially roofed, twenty-five roofed buildings, one of which is annotated as a school, a field-system, some enclosures, a field-system and a head-dyke is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire 1876, sheet cxlviii). Seven unroofed, one partially roofed, thirty-five roofed buildings, some enclosures and some field walls are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1973).
Information from RCAHMS (SAH) 22 August 1996
An archaeological assessment was carried out by J G Robertson in 1996 as part of an environmental impact assessment for a proposed Woodland Grant Scheme application. The assessment consisted largely of the detailed study of a single 1988 aerial photograph.
Site 12: Rectangular buildings. Linear series of rectangular buildings, which were probably part of Glenuig township. The series consists of a single building to the north, a group of three adjoining buildings in the middle and a further group of three detached buildings to the South. On the OS Map, the buildings appear to be appended to the boundary wall, No. 9, but on the AP this wall was clearly built to join up these pre-existing buildings.
Refs: Marked on OS Map and visible on AP.
Recommendation: Ground inspection - check relationships with the wall, No. 9. These buildings are on the boundary of the WGS area and perhaps not at great risk. Nevertheless, detailed recording, including a photographic survey would be useful. <1>
A follow-up full walkover survey was conducted by Wordsworth Archaeological Services in 1996.
Site No: 12
Site name: Glenuig
Description: The remains of 4 drystone buildings have been incorporated into the fabric of boundary dyke 9. They were shown as still roofed and presumably occupied in 1899.
Recommendation: Lying within the dyke they should not need special protection, as long as periodic weeding prevents trees falling on the dyke. <2>
