Full Description
(NC 90282321) Earth House (NR). OS 6"map, (1963)
A souterrain enters under the SE corner of the bank of a modern enclosure, which has, projecting from its east bank, two converging horns which may represent the remains of a hut-circle.
The souterrain entrance is about 2' wide, and slopes down, sharply curving, with a general SE trend for 3' at which distance the roofing begins. It then runs south for some 22', where it swings to run WSW for the remaining distance of 18'. From the entrance it widens steadily until, 35' from the entrance it is 4'6" in both width and height. RCAHMS 1911, visited 1909
As described. Visited by OS (WDJ) 2 June 1961
The souterrain is correctly described by the RCAHMS. The enclosure of abandoned 18/19th century dating, has an elevated interior and the souterrain is entered from this level. The alleged remains of a hut-circle is mere conjecture. Firstly, two, unimpressive converging arcs of overgrown rubble partially enclose an area, not noticeably levelled, and more rectangular than semicircular in plan; secondly, projecting as they do from the bottom of the enclosure bank, a constructional association with the souterrain, is highly improbable.
