Full Description

NC85SE 15 8803 5007.

At NC 8803 5007 on a dry rise are the amorphous remains of a mound which has been almost completely obliterated by the bulldozing of a 4.0m wide trench through it down to the hard pan. When investigated initially prior to its destruction, it was circular and turf-covered, measuring 10.5m in diameter and 0.7m high with a bi-partite shieling on its summit. Its appearance prior to destruction, strongly suggested a cairn, but this was not borne out by the exposed contents, for the mound was primarily of earth with rubble stones only at the fringe. No cist or kerb is apparent. The date and purpose of the mound remain unclear. Visited by OS (N K B) 2 June 1977.
