Full Description

A farmstead at Clais Gheal beside the Abhainn Bheag (River Dyke), Forsinard.

The features were seen and recorded during a walkover survey by the University of Edinburgh led by R Mercer in 1977:

DYK 10 Settlement Height: 0.50m Grass covered series of ruined buildings and walls
a. Building 1. Dimensions: 38m x 6m with 1 subdivision 9m from the S. end. Corn drying kiln 6.50m x 3.50m appended to S. end
b. Building 2. Dimensions: 18.50m x 6m 1 internal subdivision. Stretch of eaves-drip against S. wall face
c. Building 3. Dimensions: 22.50m x 4.50m 2 subdivisions both 6m, from either end. Possible entrance in S. Wall. Linked by extension of E. wall to field system.
Elevation: 114m. (375') O.D.

Three building foundations, ranging in size from 20 by 4m to 30 by 4m, with associated enclosures and a corn-drying kiln at NC 8646 4922. Run-rig cultivation is present.

This farmstead, comprising four unroofed buildings, two of which are adjoining long buildings, is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Sutherland 1878, sheet xxxvii). Four unroofed buildings, two of which are adjoining long buildings and one of which is a three compartment long building, are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10,560 map (1962).
