Full Description

A hut circle at Bog Ban (Dalreoich). Originally recorded by the OS as hut circle 'A'. See MHG63975 for hut circle 'B'.

Centred at NH 578 769, at base of a SW-facing slope are two circular stone-walled huts (A and B). Hut 'A' is denuded and evident as a platform, measuring c12m diameter, with traces of walling around the perimeter. Several outer wall facing stones are visible in N and E arcs. In NE two or three inner facing stones give a wall thickness of 1.5m at this point. S and W parts of platform are eroded. The entrance is not evident.
'B' is mutilated and also evident as a platform, measuring about 8.5m in diameter, with traces of walling round the rim. The entrance, in S is ill-defined. To NE of the huts for a distance of about 300m in rough terrain, are a few scattered stone clearance heaps which are probably from cultivation plots contemporary with the huts.
Huts surveyed at 1/2500.
Visited by OS (RL) 11 November 1970 and (ISS) 22 March 1973.

No change to previous field report. Surveyed at 1:10 000.
Visited by OS (JB) 18 November 1976.

About 50m E of the public road, 200m NW of Dalreoich Farm there are two hut-circles, 30m apart. The small cairns noted previously by the OS in the vicinity were not located and may be natural mounds.
The western hut-circle (OS 'A', NH 5779 7694) is situated on a grassy eminence beside a burn about 25m E of the public road. It measures 10.5m internally within a stony bank 1.1m in thickness and 0.3m in height. The bank is poorly defined on the S.
The eastern hut-circle (OS 'B', NH 5783 7692) is covered in dense bracken and has been disturbed on its N side by scrub and trees. It measures 7.5m in diameter within a stony bank 1.8m in thickness and up to 0.4m in height. The interior is terraced into the slope and an entrance is visible on the S.
Visited by RCAHMS (PJD) 16 November 1989.

There are only slight indications of the site of hut circle A on vertical aerial photographs. <1>
