Full Description

NH84NW 53 8356 4972

An unenclosed settlement, comprising a cluster of pits, ring-ditches and ring-groove houses with internal pit-circles have been recorded as cropmarks on oblique aerial photography (RCAHMSAP 1988, 1989, 2000) lying on a ridge about 350m NNW of Budgate. At least four concentric cropmarks, representing ring-ditches or wide souterrains, and six ring-groove houses can be seen, the latter represented by either a pit-circle or a ring-groove or both with an overall diameter of about 15m. A general scatter of pits can be seen throughout the settlement. At least one large ring-groove enclosure is visible on the 1989 photographs intersecting other ring-groove houses and at least one ring-ditch, and measuring about 70m in diameter. This may be a large house or a palisaded enclosure.
