Full Description

An Archaeological Survey of the townships of North & South Screapadal, with a survey of the surrounding area, on Raasay was undertaken by ACFA in 1997.

Features 4b,c; Feature 4b is a 'figure of eight', twin cell structure on a natural plateau above the burn at the 190m contour at NG 5708 4527. It measures 5.3m overall internally with cells 3.5m and 1.5m diameter. There is little structure left and what there is, is much overgrown by turf, suggesting it is much older than 4a. This feature and 4c were previously recorded by ACFA in 1991 and 4c was found with great difficulty at NG 5705 4535, only by measuring out the 20m to the NE reported by ACFA. There was no evidence of the rear cell reported to make it a figure of eight. A circular feature with an internal diameter of 3.5m, there was even less structure visible than 4b. Both structures could have been shielings but 4b was perilously close to the burn and liable to flooding. Their condition gave the appearance of some antiquity and these may be hut circles from a period when the burn perhaps took a different course. <1>

Note: Site not visible on aerial photographs so location based on old SMR 1-10,000 map sheets. (TB 5/3/26)
