Full Description
Sletell (name verified): a settlement of three crofts with associated enclosures and cultivation enclosed within a head-dyke, which was deserted "about 30 years ago" according to local sources. This is presumably a post-Clearance settlement though this could not be verified locally.
Visited by OS (NKB) 25 August 1978.
A rapid coastal zone assessment survey was conducted by GUARD in the Autumn of 1997 commissioned by Historic Scotland from the Viking and Early Settlement Archaeological Research Project based at the University of Glasgow.
On a rough stretch of ground immediately above the cliffs at the east of Slettel township is an area of `lazy-beds' running NW-SE. These cultivation remains are located along the NW side (ie inside) of a turf-and-stone dyke which skirts the township and would appear to have been its head-dyke. The beds cover an area approximately 30 m wide and are being slightly eroded at the cliff-edge where the land is slipping. <1>
