Full Description

Approximately 60m SW of the road in an area of bracken and grass and about 110m OD is a very degraded single cell rectangular shieling. The remains measure 3m by 3.5m and a possible entrance is visible in the W corner. Just outside the S wall is an overgrown circular stone setting which measures c.2.0m in diameter.
Visited by A McNicol 26 March 1991.
Miket, R et al. 1991; NMRS MS/530.

An Archaeological Survey of the townships of North & South Screapadal, with a survey of the surrounding area, on Raasay was undertaken by ACFA in 1998.

Feature B: This site could have been a small settlement with three possible houses or shielings and several areas of terracing and lazy beds close by. The second structure (b) at NG 5756 4602, also overlooks the U-bend in the road, to the west and slightly higher than (a). About 40m south of the road, it lies on a nice level natural platform, facing northeast. The sub-circular shieling is about 3m by 2m north to south, with a 0.7m wide entrance in the west. The rough boulder walling stands to a height of 0.4m and is 0.5 to 0.6m thick. A small round depression at the SE end is stone edged and may have been a stack stand. The area surrounding the structure has at one time been marginally improved and shows signs of rig or lazy beds. As at 'A', the shieling appears to overlie an earlier, sub-circular structure indicated by shallow banks and measuring 8m by 4m. <1>
