Full Description

A possible partial alternative route for the C18 Bernera-Fort Augustus military road through Glen Moriston.

The currently accepted route for the C18 Bernera-Fort Augustus military road through Glen Moriston, and as shown on OS maps from the 1st Edition onwards, follows a route to the south of the River Moriston until it reaches the Ceannacroc Bridge (see MHG15496) and then runs northwestwards towards Meall Doire nan Caorach before turning westwards. However, the Roy Military Survey maps show the road crossing the 'River Morrison' at a narrow point, just to the west of a small settlement called 'Wester Ainich' and then closely following the north bank of the river before crossing at a ford on a south running tributary of the River Moriston, labelled 'River Doe' on the OS 1st Edition map, to the east of a small small settlement labelled 'Bun Do'. It then runs roughly northwestwards, crossing a burn before joining the accepted route just before it turns westwards. It is possible that this was the original route that was later found to be at risk of erosion from movement in the course of the River Moriston and/or the river crossing point became unsafe resulting in te construction of the Ceannacroc Bridge anfd a re-routing of the road south of the river. <1> <2>
