Full Description
A walkover survey and desk-based assessment for the National Trust estate at Torridon was carried out by J Wordsworth and J Harden.
This area is defined by two old dykes spread to at least lm and c0.7m high - one running from A' Chailleach NEwards, the other branching NW from it at about NG839573. The ground appears particularly poor - perhaps the turf has been stripped from this area, as it appears to have been from above the main road N of the Alligin gorge - although there is a good peat source about TOR199b.
The main dyke running in a NE direction has at least one mound of stones that could be a burial cairn, with several others along its course which are more likely to be clearance. The northernmost is a subcircular setting of stones, some on edge, measuring cam in diameter. Further south along the dyke there is a small structure marked on the map at a kink in the dyke - a tree grows out this - and there is another further south again. Each is covered in bracken, such that this area needs further investigation. <1>
