Full Description

A former settlement or township to the north of the River Einig. The site is shown on the Roy Military Survey maps as a cluster of five buildings inwith a sub-rectangular enclosure with cultivated fields to the south and labelled 'Craigan' <1>

The site of the township is shown on the OS 1st Edition 6" map labelled 'Craggan'. A large enclosure with a relatively narrow dyke adjacent to the Alltan Imheir to the east may be a later feature. Two buildings are shown but it is unknown whether they were retained from the earlier township. <2>

Features associated with the township are visible in vertical aerial photography, including the remains of at least one additional building and some fragments of dyke or enclosures on the opposite side of the Alltan Imheir and some isolated patches of rig. Of the two buildings on the OS 1st edition map, only the northernmost is still at least partly roofed. <3> <4>
