Full Description

A former settlement or township to the south of the River Einig. The site is shown as a cluster of five buildings with cultivated fields to the northeast and southeast on the Roy Military Survey maps but is unlabelled. It may have been associated with a cluster of buildings with associated cultivated fields to the north beyond a small burn (see MHG24373) named 'Lettyr'. <1>

The site of the township is shown on the OS 1st Edition 6" map labelled 'Upper Letters', with that to the north (as described above) lablled 'Lower Letters. Later features, such as rectangular enclosures and sheepfolds are also shown. <2>

Features associated with the township are visible in vertical aerial photography, including enclosure dykes and areas of rig. There are indications that larger areas of unenclosed rig lie to the northeast. <3> <4>
