Full Description

A walkover survey and desk-based assessment for the National Trust estate at Torridon was carried out by J Wordsworth and J Harden between 1996 and 2002.

'Ruins known as Carricks' H36 & H37 'which was abandoned after the owners died of consumption (info, from owner of Croft (13)). MM records this as A'Charraig. Neither structure is marked on the 1875 map but they do appear on the 1902 OS map.

The east structure, H37, is aligned SW-NE and measures c9m by c5m with wallheads nearly 2m high and gables nearly 3m high. The walls are c0.5m thick with a lime/cement (?) mortar. The south-facing wall has a central doorway with a window on each side. The wooden battens in the wall suggest it was formerly panelled or lath-and-plastered internally. MM records that this was the house, with fireplaces at both gables and a small cupboard recess beside the fireplace at the east end. The sandstone is dressed, the interstices filled with small flat stones and clay (?) mortar.

The west structure, H36, is aligned W-E and measures c7m by c5m with walls c0.6m thick. The walls of the main part of the building all stand to their original height of c2m, with gables c3m high, being c0.6m thick. A chimney stack survives at the west end, where the stone lip suporting the thatched roof can still be seen. Today this part of the building has a tin roof. An additional structure had been added to the E end of this structure that was once c5m long but it has now been largely robbed out. MM records that this was once a barn, with a filled in window opening in the back wall and the door to the front. MM also notes that the walls have been raised and there is a chimney at the west end.

The area around these buildings is enclosed by a dyke. <1>
