Full Description

A walkover survey and desk-based assessment for the National Trust estate at Torridon was carried out by J Wordsworth and J Harden between 1996 and 2002.

There is an area of extensive peat cutting between the Alit na Criche to the west and the Alit na Druim na h-Uamhaidh to the east. At c380m OD are at least 5 shieling structures/peat stack bases. They are sited on low mounds/uncut islands within the peat and are mostly obscured by long heather. Flat stones are evident marking structures c4m by c2.5m. The most prominent has lost its heather cover to be revealed as a typical shieling-type structure and aligned N/S, whereas the most southerly, close to the Alit Druim na h-Uamhaidh, is aligned NW/SE. They are considered too similar to shieling bothies to be purely peat stack bases. <1>
