Full Description

A walkover survey and desk-based assessment for the National Trust estate at Torridon was carried out by J Wordsworth and J Harden between 1996 and 2002.

A group of 7 structures form a small shieling ground on a tributary of the Alit Druim na h-Uamhaidh.
94a; Oval/rectangular flat-topped mound aligned ENV and obscured by heather & moss but possibly measuring c4m by 2.5m. The mound is cO.5m higher than the surrounding ground.
94b; Circular drystone structure c1m internal diameter with walls up to clm high and c0.3m wide. It is sitting on a structure c4m by 2.5m aligned NE/SW characterised a slight, flattened mound.
94c; Oval/rectangular flat-topped low mound c4m by 2.5m aligned ESE/WNW. It is largely obscured by heather & coarse grasses, but stone footings are faintly visible.
94d; Oval drystone structure measuring cam in diameter and aligned ENE with an entrance on the WSW. ThetivAs consist of upright boulders c0.3-0.5m average diameter. Perhaps a stock or milking pen.
94e; Oval/rectangular low flat-topped mound aligned ENV and measuring c3m by 2.5m. Some stone footings protrude through the moss grass & rushes. There may be traces of an earlier circular structure extending under the west wall.
94f; Possible circular structure c3m in diameter with large stones marking the walls.
94g; Oval/rectangular low flat-topped mound measuring c4m by 2.5m and aligned NE/SW. Some stone footings protrude through the moss, grass & heather.

At NG 8496 5830 & NG 8495 5834 are the remains of a low drystone wall. It is only a slight feature and would not appear substantial enough to form the foundation for a turf dyke. It may have been associated with this shieling site. This shieling area is mentioned in Murdoch Macdonald's Walks around Torridon but is not shown on Campbell Smith's survey of 1837 or later OS surveys. <1>
