Full Description
A walkover survey and desk-based assessment for the National Trust estate at Torridon was carried out by J Wordsworth and J Harden between 1996 and 2002.
On the south side of the bay fronting the present property at Am Ploc (TOR084) are the remains of three structures: The western building of this group is aligned N-S and measures c6m by c3m. It is characterised by single lines of boulders set upright, though there is also slight evidence for an inner line of stones. The boulders are up to c0.4m high.About 20m WNW of the SE corner of the first structure is another boulder walled building, this one with a double skin of boulders evident. It is aligned NNW-SSE and measures c6m by c4m. The west wall incorporates a natural boulder outcrop. About 12m WSW of the second is another rectangular structure formed of single large boulders up to c0.5m high. It is aligned NNW-SSE. A small jetty still survives to the SW of the present house running c25m into the sea. It is formed of large squarish boulders c1m in diameter. An area c7m wide has been cleared of stones to the south of this. These are shown on the 1837 survey, as well as others about TOR084 which do not survive - they were probably cleared in 1845. <1>
