Full Description
The probable township of Dalamein. <1>
A walkover survey and desk-based assessment was undertaken by A Coombs at Dalnamein for the Sutherland Longhouse Project, a community engagement project hosted by Historylinks Museum, Dornoch in 2019-20.
Site 36: This large upstanding dry stone walled enclosure is associated with the shepherd's house and would have been one of the earliest buildings built after the clearance of the settlement. It is largely complete but in a poor condition with many areas of collapse. Features 37 and 38 form part of the NW wall. There is at least one entrance on the NW and one on the east and there may have been others. On the 1st Ed OS map there is a second compartment to the enclosure, extending to the NE of the present wall. This compartment is not shown on the 2nd Ed OS map and is not visible on the ground, other than an occasional slight change in level. A sheep fank, enclosure 40, forms part of the SE wall. <2>
NGR adjusted based on 1999-2001 vertical aerial photographs. <3>
