Full Description
Remains of a house, enclosure and kennels at South Ardachy.
The features are shown and labelled on the OS 1st Edition map. <1>
These features were noted during a walkover survey by Highland Archaeology Services in 2014 in advance of a proposed run of river hydro scheme along Allt Ladaidh, Glen Garry. Features 10 a & b: Two structures located to the South of the current access track in a levelled area. The levelling has produced a step on the east side and a low bank runs at a distance to the south defining the area. This bank has been obscured in places by felled timber but is roughly the area shown as cleared on the current map. On the north side of the road a levelled area clear of trees is also visible although it is not clear if this is connected to the structures.
Structure 10a is a substantial, random rubble built rectangular building with dressed sandstone quoins. The structure is 9m by 5m orientated ENE / WSW and has been built in rough courses. It survives to 2m in height all the way around and has a central doorway on the South side flanked by two rectangular windows. There are no other openings in this part of the building and the west gable appears to have been badly re-pointed in concrete. A poorer quality extension with window and narrow door has been added on the North side. The extension survives up to 1.5m in height with the doorway on the North side and a window on the south. This is 2m by 5m.
Structure 10b is a smaller building in much poorer condition. It is of dry stone construction and made from rounded local stone. It is 6m by 4m and oriented a little off the larger building ENE/WSW. It survives up to a maximum of 1.3m in height with an entrance facing the track on the North side. <2>
Much of the area covered by these features was subsequently forested. However, by 2023 vertical aerial photography shows the trees to have been removed. The ruins of the two buklidngs as described in <2> still survive and there are slight indications that the northeast corner of the enclosure may also have survived, albeit probably damaged. <3>
