Full Description

This group of shielings and buildings are situated on the NE bank of the Allt Bienn na Bioneide, and at least two of the structures, possibly buildings, lie adjacent to the Portree road. The first edition of the Ordnance Survey 6-inch map of 1880 (Island of Skye &c., Inverness-shire, 1880, xv) depicts two roofed buildings and one unroofed building on the NE side of the Portree road at its junction with the Dunvegan road, all of which were unroofed on the second edition of the Ordnance Survey map of 1904 (Island of Skye &c., Inverness-shire, 1904, xv). Traces of the walls of the western two are recognisable as stony banks situated on platforms terraced into the slope. The westernmost is cut away by the road to the S and by a drain around its N and W, but the footings of the other measuring 3.4m by 2.5m within a stony bank spread to 1.7m in thickness and up to 0.6m in height. The third building was not identified.
Four shieling-mounds were identified, three between the road and the Allt Beinn na Boineide and a fourth about 100m to the NE, on a low knoll to the E of an unnamed tributary of the same burn. Most remarkable is a large mound some 15m in length, which may, at least in part, be a shieling-mound. A hut is built into the W end of this mound which measures 5m by 3m and there is a slight dimple in the E end. The other three lie on the banks of the unnamed tributary of the Allt Beinn na Boineide.
