Full Description

A rapid archaeological survey of a proposed WGS application at Aryhoulan, Ardgour near Fort William was carried out in 2000 by J. Wordsworth.

Site 7: The dyke between these points is proposed for refurbishment except for the portion excluded in the centre. The dyke extends further to the SE where it is fairly ruinous and to the NE outside the survey area towards the river. The dyke is built of angular, probably quarried stones. Where best preserved it stands up to 1.6m high on a base lm wide tapering to 0.5m wide at the top where coping stones are set. A distinctive feature of this dyke are a series of through stones placed c lm apart and at c0.8m high.
There are a series of gaps in this dyke, the worst being immediately north of the excluded sheeepfold where a 30m stretch has been eroded by the burn. <1>

NGR adjusted based on 1999-2001 vertical aerial photographs. <2>
