Full Description

A rapid walk-over archaeological survey was carried out in 1999 by J. Wordsworth as part of the preparation for a planned Community Woodland in Knoydart.

Site 11: The two buildings marked here were not recorded on the earlier OS maps. The westernmost building aligned NE/SW is the best preserved measuring 4m by 3m with large stone boulder footings, possibly for an animal shed or byre. The other building measures 9m by 4m and is aligned NW/SE and is only visible as a more verdant patch. An enclosure extends 8m to the north and 5m to the east of this building. The enclosure drawn on the current OS map connecting the two buildings was not observed, though it may well still survive. There is heavy bracken cover in this area. An alder grown track extends both east and west of this site. Both buildings are likely to have been abandoned well before 1873. <1>
