Full Description
A rapid walk-over archaeological survey was carried out in 1999 by J. Wordsworth as part of the preparation for a planned Community Woodland in Knoydart. <1>
Site 1: A rectangular setting of large boulders measuring 4.5m by 2m and aligned NE/SW, has been set on a sloping glacial ridge overlooking Croulin. It survives only one stone high and there is no evidence of turf or stone tumble to suggest it was ever built higher. It is bracken-clad. 40m to the SE there is a grassy/bracken-clad stone setting 4m by 2m aligned ESE/WNW that may mark a shieling hut. The rectangular setting may be connected with the possible shieling, though it is an unusual size for a fold or store. Alternatively it may mark a?norse grave site overlooking Croulin. If the later is a correct interpretation then this is a site of some significance. <1>
Note: Site not visible on aerial photographs so location based on grid coordinates. (TB 6/8/25)
