Full Description

A field evaluation walk-over of an area affected by the proposed Woodland Grant Scheme was conducted at Balchladich, Assynt by C. Dagg in 1999.

Site 2: Causeway or dam. Downstream of where the burn connecting Loch nan Lub and Loch an Easain rejoins after flowing round an island, where it widens out to enter Loch an Easain, is a rubble causeway or dam. It does not now serve to raise the water level and the water now flows through two adjacent channels at the midpoint. On the south side, the dam curves westwards to form a retaining wall to the lochan for a few metres, while on the north side it joins a turf dyke which runs eastwards. In the water to the east of the dam is another row of stones curving from the dam to the bank suggesting an earlier line of construction. Upstream, the south channel of the divided burn contains placed stones suggesting another dam or stepping stones. <1>
