Full Description
Raasay Survey 2000. Site 3: This is a substantially built single storey stone building with a slate roof. The building is 24.0m long lying close to a north to south axis, by 6.0m wide. The ground has been cut into along the building's east side to form a level stance with the maximum excavation about 2.0m having been effected at the northeast corner. The building is divided into two main compartments. The northernmost, having been the accommodation, is 10.0m long with a central door and single large windows on either side, all in the western wall. The southern compartment is the meeting hall and is some 12.5m long with three windows of the same size also in the western wall. The entrance to the hall is in the southwest corner in the south wall. The walls are built with rough-hewn stone and large stone lintels occur at all the openings. The lintel over the hall door in the south wall is notable, being a red Torridonian old sandstone block, 1.40m long by 0.35m high and at least 0.25m thick. The roof is slate on timber sarking carried on timber couples, hipped at the southern end but with a full chimneyed gable at the north end containing two flues. Over the mutual wall dividing the two main compartments is a chimneypiece with three flues. The conclusion drawn is that fireplaces existed in the attics of the northern accommodation portion of the building and that a single fire at the northern end opposite the door heated the hall.
The building is in a reasonable condition with indications of repair works to the roof, windows and sills having been done perhaps some forty years ago. Concrete sills and skews have been inserted but are now showing signs of erosion. On the north the roof has sagged on either side of the mutual wall. <1>
