Full Description
Raasay Survey 2000. Site 1: The school building is presently inhabited and consequently a full detailed survey was not possible. The property was measured on the exterior, with notes added from a visit two years ago, (1998) when the property was vacant. It is clear that the building has been subject to rehabilitation works to convert it to a dwelling but, for whatever reason, the works were abandoned before completion. The building is now occupied on a semi-permanent basis and the occupant's privacy was respected. From previous notes and observations, the original house door on the west wall has been closed up and a window formed. The window to the south of the original door in the house has been opened up to form a new doorway. Within the building a new suspended timber floor has been laid and the under floor ventilation improved, but not completed. No interior partitions had been formed and still do not appear to have been built.
Like the Mission House, this is a two-compartment building and is of about the same date. The northern part of the building was the school master's house, while the southern portion was the school proper. As with the Mission House, the dwelling had an entrance in the west wall with a single window on each side, with, to the south of this, a further three windows giving light to the school room. At the south wall is porch spanning the width of the building, having a lean-to roof. Doors occur at each end of the porch in the short east and west walls and were the entrances for pupils, girls and boys. The west door has an arched head and was more ornate. The building is stone built with a cement render finish which is in poor condition, sprawling at many places. The roof appears in good condition and is clad with slates. The northern section, or schoolhouse has two chimneys in the north gable implying an upper floor room with a fireplace. Above the mutual wall is a chimneystack with three flues, being two serving the house as at the end wall and a single fire serving the classroom on the south side. <1>
