Full Description
A rapid walk-over survey of a proposed Woodland Grant Scheme application at North Applecross, Wester Ross, was undertaken by C. Dagg.
Site no. F4: Building and Still Site. The rectangular building, measuring 3.7m by 7.8m, has been built onto a rockface which provides most of its back wall. There is a central doorway in the S wall. Attached to the west of the building is a depression, constructed by removing material from a hole to build up the bank below and to the side of it. It measures 3m in length, 1.9m in width and is 0.8m deep, with tumbled stones at its bottom. This is, by local tradition, the site of an illicit still; the still itself having been thrown into the lochan to prevent discovery by the excise men.<1>
