Full Description

Four clearance cairns were recorded during an archaeological walkover survey by AOC Archaeology Group in 2015 of the proposed site for a hydro scheme at Uppat Estate, near Brora, Sutherland. Sites 6a-d: grass-covered clearance cairns measuring 6m long east-west by 5m and between 0.4 and 0.8m high. <1>

A small evaluation and archaeological watching brief were subsequently conducted by AOC Archaeology Group in 2015 during ground clearance for a site compound with relation to the hydro pipeline. The fieldwork was undertaken on 12th August 2015. Due to the proximity of archaeological sites to the proposed route, mitigation measures were put into effect to record and protect the monuments. A small cairn, which had been interpreted as a clearance cairn (Site 6b) during the walkover survey (see EHG4703), was evaluated and concluded to comprise a small mound of stone overlying boulder outcrop. During the watching brief, evidence for vegetation burning was identified near the cairn. This material was sealed below a layer of natural subsoil, possibly slopewash, and was left in situ below infill. <2>
