Full Description
A desk based assessment and rapid walk-over archaeological survey was carried out at Torroble, Lairg by Wordsworth Archaeological Services in 1999.
Site No.1 2: A well-preserved turf or turf and stone bank lm high forms an enclosure 20m square just to the E of the modern road. It sits within a slighter bank 0.7m high that curves NW and then W. The earlier OS map shows both features as extant with a similar enclosure to the SE that now survives W of the road in the later plantation. The dyke on the earlier map evidence formed the E boundary of the settlement at Tomich. The enclosure would originally have been substantial enough to hold cattle. Recommendation: These features should be excluded from the planting and retained as landscape features defining the former boundaries and land-use in this area.<1>
