Full Description

A desk based assessment and rapid walk-over archaeological survey was carried out at Torroble, Lairg by Wordsworth Archaeological Services in 1999.

Site No.1 1: A dyke of turf and stone or possibly a stone-faced bank runs in position as drawn on the current OS map. This was also recorded on earlier OS maps and is presumably part of a large stock enclosure connected with Riemerstaig. No traces of earlier cultivation are visible in the interior and the majority of the enclosed area is heather moorland and bog, though there are traces of improved ground at the NW. The western edge no longer survives. Some large pines grow at the E end of this feature but they do not seem to have been deliberately planted, as there are not traces of other trees further to the W. Presumably the drier ground of the bank has been more receptive to seed germination. Recommendation: The dyke should be preserved as a landscape feature and no planting should take place within 5m of this feature. The enclosure could optionally be accentuated as a landscape feature by selecting different tree species to the N and S of the enclosure dyke. <1>
