Full Description
A desk based assessment and rapid walk-over archaeological survey was carried out at Torroble, Lairg by Wordsworth Archaeological Services in 1999.
Site No.9 : 80m to the NE of Site 8. is a circular hollow 10m E/W by 8m N/S. Vehicle tracks leading to it and erosion in the centre show that it has been used as a feeding station for stock. However the shape of the hollow and the bank that is visible most clearly on the S and E suggest this may once have been a roundhouse. Several peat and heather clad mounds up to 5m by 3m and nearly lm high lie to the N and E . These are almost certainly the remains of field clearance cairns associated with the putative structure, though no stones were actually observed. Recommendation: This ?structure and the nearby cairns should be protected both from planting and from accidental damage. The walls are vulnerable to damage from vehicles and contractors should be made aware of the position of this building to prevent such damage. The whole area should be excluded from planting. <1>
