Full Description
A desk based assessment and rapid walk-over archaeological survey was carried out at Torroble, Lairg by Wordsworth Archaeological Services in 1999.
Site No.8: A round-ended turf walled longhouse survives as low bank of turf no more than 0.2m high. It sits on a low ridge and forms an oval hollow 6m by 3m externally aligned E/W. A possible porch or annexe, measuring 3m E/W by 2m N/S, survives on the NW corner. An ill-defined but smaller structure may lie 5m to the W aligned NW/SE. It lies 35m E of the road and 50m N of the modem fence. Recommendation: This structure should be protected both from planting and from accidental damage. The walls are vulnerable to damage from vehicles and contractors should be made aware of the position of this building to prevent such damage. <1>
The site may be vaguely visible at the described location on vertical aerial photographs taken in 2004 ('Millennium Map' series). <2>
