Full Description

A desk based assessment and rapid walk-over archaeological survey was carried out at Torroble, Lairg by Wordsworth Archaeological Services in 1999.

Site No2 : A turf and stone dyke or a stone-faced bank runs W from the railway towards the river. This is the continuation of a boundary visible E of the railway. At the E end are 2 enclosure walls as drawn with an entrance through the dyke between the 2 smaller enclosures. Immediately beyond these walls to the N and W are slight traces of clearance cairns and a possible cultivation terrace. However in general there is very little evidence for cultivation in this area, despite the estate plan of 1794 which suggests this whole area was formerly cultivated. The feature is badly obscured by bracken and birch scrub
Recommendation: Because this is in an area of active birch regeneration direct damage may not occur during the life of the WGS. Removal of the trees would only encourage bracken growth , making the dyke equally obscured. <1>

Note: Site not visible on aerial photographs so location based on grid coordinates. (TB 11/6/25).
