Full Description

An archaeological survey was undertaken by Headland Archaeology in 1999 for the WGS proposal at Bunloit Hill, Drumnadrochit.

Site No. 4
Location: Balbeg
Class: Dyke
Land use: Rough grazing
Description: A collapsed stone dyke runs straight up the hill from the south end of the Balbeg township. It is 200m long, originally 0.7 m now spread up to 1.5 m wide and 1 m high. At its lower end it contains a curious curving segment, as if it has incorporated part of a possibly earlier circular structure. The dyke is shown on the first edition OS map with its curving segment, defining the south-west edge of a cultivated field. It is possible that the remaining parts of the structure were removed during the cultivation of the field.
Condition: The dyke is partly collapsed but stable.

NGR adjusted based on 1999-2001 vertical aerial photographs. <2>
