Full Description
A possible shieling setlement near the Erchless Burn, Erchless, Strath Glass. The site is visible in vertical aerial photographs taken in 2009. It consists of at least 5 possible shieling huts of various sizes and a short length of dyke. All the huts lie on the east side of the dyke, with hut 2 inmediately adjacent and hut 5 located at its southern end. Hut 1 (at NGR 241772 844290) is the northernmost and possibly the largest of the group. It measures c.6m in diameter and may alternatively be a small pen. Hut 2 lies c.70m to the southwest of Hut 1 (at NGR 241701 844259) and appears rectangular measuring c.5.5m x 2.5m. Hut 3 lies c.30m t the south of Hut 1 (at NGR 241768 844256), is also rectangular and measures c.5.5m x 2.5m. Hut 4 lies c.42m to the south of Hut 3 (at NGR 241765 844209) and is a vagus earthwork measuring c.5m x 3m. Hut 5 lies c.28m to the southwest of Hut 4 at the end of the short length of dyke (at 241735 844190) and measures c.6m x 4m. The narrow dyke runs south-southeastwards from c. NGR 241692 844275 to c. 241733 844195 where it meets Hut 5. There is a possible sixth hut c. 7.5m to the southwest of Hut 5 at NGR 241724 844180, but it is very indistinct. <1>
