Full Description

A walkover survey was carried out by Cannich Archaeological Services in 1999 of parts of the RSPB reserve at Corrimony prior to tree-planting.

Section 6, Site 27: Wall. Runs roughly SSW - NNE along the ridge between the road and the River Enrick east of Loch Comhnard. In the SW, an area of erosion about 10 m wide separates the end or last visible point of the wall from the road. This point is only about 40 m from the junction of walls nos. 28 and 29 on the other (west) side of the road, and wall no. 28 could be a continuation of wall no. 27, as it keeps a similar direction. The large gap between them can be accounted for by the road crossing them at a very oblique angle. Wall no. 27, or the old fence which follows its line, is shown on the OS map, however, while wall no. 28 is not. The old fence runs roughly parallel to wall no. 27, to the east of it near its southern end, to the west of it further north, and actually along it just south of the point where it crosses the burn which flows out of Loch Comhnard to the River Enrick (NH 3670 2807).

The condition of preservation of the wall varies greatly throughout its length. From its SW end until it begins to descend from the ridge towards the burn, it is usually only about 10 cm high and spread to up to 3 m wide, disappearing altogether in some boggy places. The vegetation cover is mainly heather. Where it descends from the north end of the ridge towards the burn it is 20 cm to 30 cm high, with many stones visible, and a covering of grass. In the last section, between the crossing of the burn and the junction with wall no. 19, it is visible only as a very slight rise in the vegetation cover of wetland grasses, bog myrtle and bog cotton, and it disappears in boggy ground just before its junction with wall no. 19. <1>
