Full Description
A walkover survey was carried out by Cannich Archaeological Services in 1999 of parts of the RSPB reserve at Corrimony prior to tree-planting.
Section 6, Site 21: Rock. Situated on a fairly level stretch of ground on the hill slope above the south end of Loch Comhnard, about 50 m east of the fence dividing section 6 from section 4. This rock is natural, and is probably a glacial erratic, but its unusual form means that it must have been noticed by earlier inhabitants of the region and may have been the focus of rituals or the subject of legends or superstitions. The rock lies on a flat outcrop of bedrock. It is 3 mE-Wx 1.5 m, and 1.40 m high. There is a space under the west end, raising it well above the ground, and towards the east end there is also a small space running through underneath it. On the south side there is a triangular niche in the face of the rock, which could act as a foothold to enable a person to climb on to the top of the rock; this niche may be natural, but could have been cut deliberately. On top of the rock several small stones have been heaped up into a small cairn; the stones are moss-covered and the cairn could be of any date. <1>
